When to Choose 304 vs. 316 Stainless Steel

The main difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel lies in resistance to chloride corrosion. 304 is suitable for processing general dry foods or in neutral environments; 316, with added molybdenum, offers higher tolerance to salt, acids, and hot-water cleaning. Selection should be based on the food contact characteristics, cleaning frequency, and water quality conditions, not simply on price.

Basic Differences Between the Two Steels

Both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels and meet basic requirements for food contact applications. The key difference is that 316 contains molybdenum, giving it superior corrosion resistance in chloride, acidic, or alkaline environments compared to 304. For general neutral food processing, 304 is sufficient; however, if the process involves high-salt ingredients, acidic products, or frequent hot-water cleaning, 316's durability better meets long-term use requirements. Choosing the wrong material can lead to rust spots and weld corrosion, affecting hygiene and product lifespan.

    For neutral environments such as egg liquid mixing or steamed egg forming, 304 stainless steel is sufficient and is a common, cost-effective choice.

    If the process involves pickling, salty, or acidic products, 316 offers better corrosion resistance, reducing the risk of rust spots and metal release.

  • Frequent Hot-Water or Chemical Cleaning

    In scenarios with high cleaning frequency, hot water, or detergent use, 316 provides more stable tolerance to chlorides than 304.

  • Coastal Areas or High-Chloride Water Sources

    If the factory is located in a coastal area or uses untreated high-chloride water, 316 better prevents long-term rust issues.

What Buyers Should Confirm When Requesting Quotes

When requesting quotes from manufacturers, it is recommended to clearly specify the types of food contact, cleaning methods, and water sources, and ask suppliers to indicate the steel grade used for food contact parts. In whole-plant projects, different process units may use different materials; be sure to verify each item rather than assuming a single specification. Additionally, weld treatment and surface finishing also affect actual corrosion resistance; the steel grade is only one factor. Final selection should be based on actual process and cleaning procedures, and request corresponding material certificates from the manufacturer.
