CE and Food Machinery Regulations Across Countries

The CE mark is a basic requirement for entering the EU market, but it is not globally recognized. Countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the US, and Canada have different requirements for electrical safety, machinery safety, and contact materials for food machinery. Before exporting, each target market must be confirmed item by item to avoid goods being returned or requiring additional documentation upon arrival. For buyers, it is essential to ask suppliers upfront which compliance documents they can provide.

Scope of the CE Mark and Common Misconceptions

CE is a mandatory conformity mark in the EU, covering requirements such as the Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive. Many buyers mistakenly believe that 'having CE means it is globally accepted,' but in reality, CE has no legal effect outside the EU. Most Southeast Asian countries develop their own standards based on European or US regulations. Thailand has additional TISI industrial standards and food safety regulations for food machinery. Before purchasing, buyers should confirm whether the supplier has completed a full assessment according to the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, rather than simply affixing the mark.

Common Differences in Regulations Across Countries

  • EU CE

Must comply with the Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, and Electromagnetic Compatibility; food contact materials must comply with EU 1935/2004.

  • Southeast Asia (e.g., Thailand)

Thailand's TISI standards and food safety regulations coexist; some items still accept CE documentation as a reference.

  • US and Canada

Must comply with UL electrical safety, CSA, or NSF hygiene standards, which are completely independent of the CE system.

  • Middle East and Gulf Countries

Saudi Arabia requires SASO certification, and some countries adopt GSO standards, which are not interchangeable with CE.

What Buyers Should Ask When Requesting Quotes

It is recommended to provide the target market country during the inquiry stage and ask the supplier to list the compliance documents they can provide, including CE Declarations of Conformity, material test reports, and electrical safety certificates. For food contact machinery such as egg processing equipment and filling machines, material certificates are especially critical. If the supplier cannot provide corresponding documents for a specific country, the buyer bears the risk of customs clearance and acceptance issues. For complete plant projects, the allocation of regulatory responsibilities should be clearly defined in the contract to avoid future disputes.
